Australia has initiated a two-day review to modernize copyright laws struggling to keep pace with AI advancements. The Copyright and AI Reference Group, comprising tech and creative industry representatives, seeks solutions that protect creators without stifling innovation.
Artists and publishers are pushing back against AI firms using copyrighted material without compensation. The government is exploring a paid licensing system under the Copyright Act, which WOULD require AI companies to pay rights holders for training data. Simplified enforcement mechanisms are also under consideration to empower creators.
